West Lake is the most famous attraction in Hangzhou

Located in the western area of Hangzhou, West Lake is the most famous attraction in the city. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the lake itself occupies 5.6 square kilometers (2.2 square miles). The lake is divided by Gu Shan Mountian, Bai Causeway, Su Causeway and Yanggong Causeway into five areas, namely Outer West Lake, West Inner Lake, North Inner Lake, Little South Lake and Yue Lake. West Lake is located in the south-west of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. With its beautiful lakes, mountains and many attractions, it has become the world-famous tourist destination and is known as the "paradise on earth" in the world. It was elected as the first batch of China's key national 5A-level scenic spot opened to the public and it is one of Top 10 China Attractions. With its accumulation of years of history, its unique southern charm and a large number of outstanding cultural landscape help itself to be selected into world cultural heritage list, and it is the only China's world cultural heritage in the class of lakes. The Santanyinyue landscape printed on the back of the paper currency for CNY 1 yuan embodies a special status of the West Lake among numerous China's scenic spots.
The lake covers a sizeable area on the southwestern edge of the city and is dotted with a number of islands, most of which are reachable only by boat, which can be hired along the shore. The largest island, Solitary Island, was once an imperial getaway but is now connected to shore by the Xiling Bridge (Xilíng Qiáo, 西泠桥) and scenic Bai Causeway (Bái Dī, 白堤). Cutting through the western side of the lake, Su Causeway provides beautiful views of the lake, as does the Yanggong Causeway (Yánggōng Dī, 杨公堤) that runs along the western shore.
