The Mogao grottoes in China

The Mogao grottoes in China, situated near the oasis town of Dunhuang on the fabled Silk Road, constitute one of the world's most significant sites of Buddhist art. In some five hundred caves carved into rock cliffs at the edge of the Gobi desert are preserved one thousand years of exquisite murals and sculpture. Mogao, founded by Buddhist monks as an isolated monastery in the late fourth century, evolved into an artistic and spiritual center whose renown extended from the Chinese capital to the far western kingdoms of the Silk Road. Among its treasures are miles of stunning wall paintings, more than two thousand statues, magnificent works on silk and paper, and thousands of ancient manuscripts, such as sutras, poems, and prayer sheets, which in 1900 were found sealed in one of the caves and then dispersed to museums throughout the world. Welcome to China, Chinatourguide.com is pleasure to provide service for your China tours, We also provide Thailand tour packages or Cambodia tour packages.

The Mogao Caves were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1987. As a State Party, China has put all World Heritage sites under top-level protection. In 1961, the Mogao Caves was listed as one of the State Priority Protected Sites by the State Council and was put under the protection of national laws including the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of Cultural Relics. The Regulations for the Conservation of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu Province (2002) has confirmed the boundaries of the conservation area, and the Master Plan for the Conservation of the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang (2006-2025), which has been reported to the Gansu Provincial Government and will be issued soon, adds the area for the control of construction, which overlaps with the buffer zone. The two directives are the most important measures taken for preserving the authenticity and integrity of the Mogao Caves. The Administrative Institution of the Mogao Caves has been cooperating with international counterparts to study conservation and site management and looks forward to continuing its work in preserving the heritage of the site.
Despite years of erosion, the murals are still brightly colored, with clear lines. Through pictures of different styles and schools drawn in different historical periods, they tell Buddhist stories and ways as well as life in the secular world. All these, plus a largest quantity of Buddhist sutras and relics kept in the caves have provided valuable material for a study of ancient China's politics, economy, and culture and arts, as well as its science and technology, military affairs, and religion, documenting national history as well as cultural exchanges between China and the world.

Local worshipers worship here and rub gold leaf on the wat's other smaller Buddha images to make merit. Indochinatourguide is pleased to offer great service in your Thailand Tour.

Wat Traimit Witthayaram Wora Wiharn, a second class royal temple, was built around 1832 AD (2375 BE). It was originally named Wat Sam Chin (Three Chinese Temple) after three Chinese donors who contributed their properties to build the temple. In 1929 AD (2482 BE), the name was changed to Wat Traimit Witthayaram and it became a royal temple in 1956 AD (2499 BE). The principal Buddha image, named Sukhothai Traimit is located within the Wiharn (Hall of Worship). The image belongs to the Sukhothai period and was presumably made during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great (1277-1317 AD, 1820-1860 BE). It was moved from Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai to Wat Chotinaram (Wat Phrayakrai) during the reign of King Rama III. Then it was moved to Wat Traimit and stored in the pavilion before being moved to the present location in 1955 AD (2498 BE). During this move the image, which was covered in white plaster was dropped, cracking the plaster. The image was then discovered to be of solid gold. The entire covering was then removed and the image restored to its current state. It is thought that the plaster covering was added to hide the true nature of the image from Burmese invaders.
